Fasching (also called Karneval) is a festive time in Germany. Dressing up and “partying” is part of the fun. This year it was celebrated early March. Girlscout Troop 005 celebrated Fasching with a child appropriate carnival/dance party.
A common food of the carnival season is the donut (krapfen). They are everywhere!
What I gather is that in pre-Christian Europe it was customary to choose a man to be the "sacred king" of the tribe for a year using a “King’s cake”. The man who got the piece of cake with a coin baked in the center was “it”. When the year was up for the chosen one, he would be sacrificed so his blood could be returned to the soil to ensure a successful harvest.
I am glad the donut has evolved into a less stressful occasion (unless you are counting calories...then there is a bit of anxiety).
